The "No Worries, I Got You" Mindset That Builds Long-Term Brand Relationships

One time April and I were in the middle of production for a sponsorship with a jewelry brand and our contact emailed us with a frantic message:

"We unexpectedly ran out of stock on the item you're promoting."

Talk about a nightmare scenario for the brand.

They just committed to paying us a lot of money, and if we published that content, no one could buy anything.

Instead of crossing our arms and saying, "That's too bad, not our problem…" (which many creators do!), we offered two possible solutions:

  • Change our Call-to-Action to encourage our audience to join a waitlist for the item

  • Keep the asset as-is and wait to publish until the stock is replenished

The brand chose the first option, and we re-recorded a simple voiceover at the end of the integration to modify our CTA.

Rather than getting upset at a brand when unexpected things happen, it's critical to have empathy.

In almost all situations, they're not purposefully introducing new requirements just to mess with you.

Instead, if your default response becomes, "No worries, I got you!" you will quickly develop a reputation as someone brands want to hire repeatedly.

To be clear, brands will sometimes ask for annoying or unnecessary things that are objectively unreasonable.

Which is why you're totally within your rights to calmly explain why you can't accommodate these requests if they're outside the scope of the current partnership.

Usually, the brand will back off.

But if they don't, start a dialogue about the incremental compensation required to make it happen.
